The Songs of Eru and Melkor
Eru’s Song:

In silence, his breath put life into the world,
A chorus coming together, pure and bright.
For each note was a star, and each chord was a flame,
All creations, now sang his name.
He painted along the air with his song,
Creating the world anew, for it was his vision all along.
Mountains rose, and rivers flowed,
All his creations live peacefully in this world which they were bestowed.
The song of peace and love,
Of truth and care,
Encompassing the world in which we all share.
We come together singing this song as one,
Just as Eru had in his great vision,
We all exist with no future of division.
I chose this instrumental song because of its light and hopeful, almost adventurous tone that I believe embodies Eru’s hopes for his world. It starts off sounding almost whimsical, later in the song slowly rising into a more triumphant and wondrous melody. This encompasses the wonder that lies in Eru’s vision for Middle Earth, being a place of great beauty and unity for all of his creations. As a part of this vision, the lyrics I wrote focus a lot on the beauty of the world itself, as well as the hopefulness of Eru’s subjects, being sure of their unity and singing this song as one.
Melkor’s Song

Rising from the song of light from which it had been born,
Piercing through the veil, cracking the ground beneath,
It’s chords twisted and it’s power great,
The song of darkness will lead the world to its true fate.
As it creeps across the world, creating shadows in its wake,
Mountains begin to crumble, and the rivers go dry,
The wicked sound comes from the depth of your soul,
And all the flowers wilt, as even the light begins to die.
Blades clash as the sky darkens,
Rain pours as thunder strikes the the earth,
The ground cracks as the source of all evil has risen,
Blood spills, and in nothing but rage and hatred,
The melody of Melkor corrupts your heart,
As your twisted reflection is revealed to be his work of art.
I chose this instrumental song for Melkor because it starts off very sinister, almost like a slow march. This mirrors how no matter what, no matter how long it takes, Melkor will continue moving forwards towards his goal of total destruction and chaos. Additionally, a large part of this song includes chanting, which I believe can be representative of Melkor’s legions of evil and twisted creatures, following him either willingly or unwillingly. These lyrics were formed in mind with Melkor being the first great evil that would arise in this world, bringing a new age of chaos upon it, specifically focusing on the influence Melkor has on his subjects, twisting their hearts with his own darkness.
I really liked how your writing shows both the beauty and darkness of these two songs. The imagery in your lyrics was powerful, especially the contrast between creation and destruction. You clearly put a lot of thought into how the music reflects the characters, and it made your interpretation really engaging!
